Bare rim or silicone ring: the one choice inside each width
Once you have settled on a metal and a width, one choice remains: the plain polished rim, or a pair that adds silicone rings. It is a smaller decision than the other two, but it changes what the edge of the cup feels like every time you wear it, so it deserves its own note.
What the ring actually is
On these pairs, the rim of each dome carries a shallow groove, and a slim ring of flexible silicone stretches over the edge and seats into it. Once seated it stays put through wear. The result is that the border resting against you is silicone rather than polished metal, and the outer face gains a bit of traction against the bra fabric. How people actually choose
Mothers who love the bare rim tend to love it for its simplicity: one solid object, nothing to take apart, the whole thing rinsed and dried in ten seconds. Those who pick the ring usually name the steadier seat under a slippery bra, or say they prefer a soft border at the edge as a matter of feel. Neither camp is wrong, and the dome under the ring is the same dome.
Two practical notes. The ring is part of the pair it came with; we would not move rings between widths, since the groove and the ring are matched. And if a ring ever loses its stretch after long service, the cups wear perfectly well bare, so nothing is lost but the option.
