A cup width that stays put
Every question we get about comfort turns out, nine times in ten, to be a question about width. The dome itself barely matters to fit. It is the rim, the folded outer edge, that either lands flat where it should or perches where it should not.
Where the rim should land
Picture the cup in place. The peak of the dome stands clear over the nipple, touching nothing. The rim is the only part in contact, and it wants to rest on skin, flat and even all the way around, with the bra pressing it lightly from outside. When the width is right you stop noticing the cup within a minute. When it is wrong, one arc of the rim takes all the pressure and announces itself all day.
Choosing between the widths
We press regular, large and extra large, and each listing states its measurements. Take ten seconds with a ruler rather than guessing off a bra size; band and cup letters describe the whole breast, not the small circle the rim actually rests on. Compare the stated dome width against yourself and pick the size whose rim clears the nipple with room to sit flat.
- Between two sizes, most mothers do better going wider. A rim that lands a little further out still sits flat; a rim that lands too close in has nowhere good to rest.
- Deeper-cupped bras hold a wide dome more gracefully than shallow ones. If your everyday bra is a thin triangle cut, the regular width usually behaves better under it.
- The two sides of a body are rarely identical. Fit the wider side; the other will be fine.
Signs the width is wrong
A pressed ring in the skin after an hour means the rim is bearing down too close in: go wider. A cup that wanders or tips under the bra usually means the opposite, a dome so broad the bra cannot pin it: go narrower, or move it under a firmer bra before blaming the metal. And a visible outline under clothing is not a width problem at all; a thin pad over the dome settles that.
